The Hudson Area Backpack Program is designed to help feed hungry children two weekends a month during the school year. All private and public elementary and middle schools participate in the program. Backpacks are filled with nonperishable, child-friendly, food items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also included is a voucher for free milk, eggs, bread and cheese from Hudson County Market or Family Fresh.

The Hudson Area Backpack Program currently serves 165 families in the Hudson area. During the 2015 school year, 74% of the participants in the program were on free or reduced lunches. The need in Hudson's community is real.

The program began with EP Rock in 2007. Today ten local churches, with the help of community support and volunteers, have made the Backpack Program a success.

The program is not only a way to distribute healthy food to those in need but is also a valuate way to raise awareness regarding various programs available to these families.

These programs include: The Sharing Tree; Operation HELP, Give Kids a Smile, summer library programs and others.

The Backpack Program was developed in 1995 in Little Rock, Arkansas. A school nurse reached out to a local food bank, Arkansas Rice Depot, for help aiding hungry students who frequently visited her with complaints of stomach aches and dizziness. The food bank began to provide the school children with nondescript backpacks containing groceries.

The Backpack Program has grown immensely. Today programs operate and serve various school districts throughout the United States. Backpack volunteers distribute 450,000 backpacks per week on average. These backpacks provide nutritious food to families in need throughout the country.
