The Hudson Area Backpack Program is designed to help feed hungry children. All private and public elementary and middle schools participate in the program. Backpacks are filled with nonperishable, child-friendly, food items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also included is a voucher for free milk, eggs, bread and cheese plus up to $5 for a meat product from Family Fresh. Two weekends a month a cinch sack of healthy snacks is provided to all those who participate.
The Hudson Area Backpack Program currently serves 165 families in the Hudson area. During the 2018-19 school year, 85% of the participants in the program were on free or reduced lunches. The need in Hudson's community is real.
The program began with EP Rock in 2007. Today ten local churches, with the help of community support and volunteers, have made the Backpack Program a success.
The program is not only a way to distribute healthy food to those in need but is also a valuable way to raise awareness regarding various programs avaiiable to these families. These programs include: The Sharing Tree; Operation HELP, Give Kids a Smile, summer library programs and others.
A good article published by the Washington Post on concerns about access to healthy food in our community due to economic insecurity and the struggles faced in distributing food even though great amounts of food are available and going to waste. See link.
Since 2018 the United Way has generously shared storage space where we are able to store food and pack backpacks at the John Coughlin Food Resource Center. We are grateful for their support.
